Industries where smart M2M solutions can help with efficiency

Smart M2M Solutions can be applied through a whole host of industries. Our team at Techbase, have put this series of articles together to highlight some of the industries where Smart M2M solutions can have a direct positive impact.

Energy & Utilities

The energy and utilities sector dominates globally. The energy industry is transforming rapidly due to the inclusion of innovative technologies, varied regulations, changing price models and decentralized power generation.

Smart M2M solutions come in to play to help users and energy companies better manage and track energy consumption through all areas in the “energy cycle”.

Smart Grid

A smart grid is an “intelligent” electricity distribution network that uses smart M2M solutions to enable the automated interaction of intelligent devices to react to critical events or motorize all electricity flowing in the system, helping to improve efficiency and reliability in energy distribution and optimize the allocation of resources and the usage of assets.

Energy Efficiency

Energy-efficiency is becoming a factor in business success, as is planned energy management in the public and private sectors, allowing for reduced energy consumption. Smart M2M solutions can help improve energy efficiency by remotely monitoring and controlling the consumption of powered devices and tracking usage for billing and reporting.

Smart Metering

Automated meter readers (AMR) are an innovative and advanced utility meter that records a business or consumers energy, water or gas usage in real time. Smart M2M solutions enables customer relationship management, demand-side management and value added services, helping to provide a more reliable and sustainable supply.

Renewable Energies: Solar & Wind

Managing solar and wind farms that are sited offshore or on remote locations is a challenge. Smart M2M solutions provide a simple, cost effective solution for retrieving assessment and monitoring data to maximize energy production and reduce the need of other sources by enabling real-time response to output changes caused by changing weather, failure or maintenance issues.

Industrial Internet of Things Solutions Are Built, Not Bought

The world is getting more connected each day, there are already more devices talking to each other than people on the planet and this trend will just keep on increasing.

“The industrial Internet of Things solutions will eventually eclipse consumer markets, in terms of both the number of connected devices and the volume and value of connections. But the market’s potential is so large because it’s not just one market.”

We couldn’t agree more. The Industrial Internet of Things solutions is a mega trend, and its economic value add will show that in time. It is not a single market, but rather a market of markets.

Different solutions may require different hardware approaches, networking technologies, cloud data storage, reporting and security requirements. We’ve had to learn the different languages of proprietary machines–becoming ‘machine linguists’ in the process.

To approach this vast “megatrend” landscape requires a versatile toolkit of wireless and embedded technologies and software and integration services, because each customer use case and scenario has its own optimized solution.

In the industrial world, you build an Industrial Internet of Things solutions, you don’t buy one. You might be able to go and buy a wearable at Best Buy or Target, but here in the Industrial Internet of Things solutions there’s no one-size fits all standard today. Furthermore, a lot of new entrants in the supplier space offer one point solution or one point product. They have a single hammer, so everyone’s problem is declared a nail. That’s why their ability to deliver value to customers is limited.

Industrial Internet of Things solutions today are about creating a strategic competitive advantage for your business. If it were easy to do–if you could just buy one off the shelf and implement it–would it be a real advantage? For how long? As early adopters of Internet of Things realize the business benefits of lower costs or the ability to deliver superior customer service, laggards will find themselves at a competitive disadvantage.

As I said before, every industry and solution requires a different combination of technologies and approaches to get the job done. A solution for a city looking to reduce their electricity bill using a smart street lighting system is completely different than a medical device maker who needs to bluetooth-enable products. The same goes for someone deploying precision agriculture equipment, or industrial fuel tanks.

For example, wireless mesh networking technology often powers smart street lighting Industrial Internet of Things solutions, which can reduce electricity costs that can account for a big chunk of a city’s energy expenses. One of our customers’ systems, which gives city crews a view into every light and its status via a web application, helps cities save up to 85 percent on energy costs. And, with reduced CO2 emissions, it also helps to protect the environment.

The Bottom Line: There’s No Panacea or Single Standard today

Our Internet of Things customer solutions span dozens of industries and hundreds of applications– each with different business goals and technology needs. So, yes, we have to agree with Foster. There’s no one Industrial Internet of Things solutions. We wouldn’t hold our breathe either. Industrial Internet of Things solutions for commercial use are created with industry and application specifications in mind, as they should be. As Foster said, “the market’s potential is so large because it’s not just one market.”

What is the term “The Internet of Things embedded devices” mean?

What is the term “The Internet of Things embedded devices” mean and how did it influence the development of our iModCloud system?

The Internet of things embedded devices is a concept that describes how devices communicate with each other via a computer network, exchanging, processing and collecting data. The network might include devices as well as services which go beyond the communication standard M2M (machine to machine). They operate among multiple domain protocols and applications and use data analysis in order to get useful information. This was the foundation on which we designed and developed our powerful iModCloud system which we will explain in detail below.

The Internet already consists of hundreds of millions devices and soon the number will be much larger than that. Certain groups of connected devices form systems and some form even more complex systems that exchange and analyse data in the Cloud.

First virtual automation controller operating in the cloud – iMod Engine

First virtual automation controller operating in the cloud – iMod Engine

iMod Engine

The iMod Engine solution is much more efficient than devices based on the industrial class hardware. It can manage a complex installation with multiple devices. Because the iMod configurations are compatible, it is possible to transfer demanding operations into iMod Engine. This way the end units with lower efficiency (iMod Gate) can be limited to certain tasks, e.g. collecting data and transferring it to the iMod Engine for further analysis, generating graphs or process visualization.

Such configuration transfer does not limit the alarm feature – it is independent. It means that the iMod Engine alerts when connection with the iMod Gate end device is lost and the end device alerts when connection with the cloud is lost. Alert will differ depending on the connected components, e.g. SMS, email, light or sound signals.

The iMod platform enables you to store objects using API. You can define your own data source channel, through which you can send pictures, audio files, videos or any binary string to the iMod platform. Data is saved into database and can be viewed on a website.

Check out the possibilities of the iMod telemetry module.

We have prepared more than 100 event configurations, which you can save to your iMod configuration.

Examples:

  • Edge-triggered event (EDGE=HIGH)
  • Edge-triggered event (EDGE=LOW)
  • constant event triggering when a condition is satisfied (EDGE=NO)
  • triggering event both when the edge condition is satisfied and when the edge condition is not satisfied (EDGE=BOTH)

See how the iMod will improve the operation of your installation

The iMod platform allows to execute tasks at a specified time.

It doesn’t matter if you are interested in the values recorded at 11:00 or 2:00, iMod will read values at any time you specify.
